Every event has a soul, a spiritual epicenter that houses its energetic essence. At Summer Solstice up on the land known as Ram Das Puri in New Mexico, there is a Gurdwara. Within that holy space sits the Siri Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh Holy Book) that holds within it a gathering of extraordinary teachings that give access to the wisdom of the Universe. This, in my opinion, is the soul of 3HO’s Kundalini Yoga Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration.
I have a profound interest in God and Spirit and the unseen forces of the Universe, but I am not a religious man in any organized sense. My pursuit of Yoga is rooted in the desire to become better at navigating the human condition and to serve others in the process. Since I come from a background of drug addiction, my spiritual path is particularly influenced by 12-Step society and I tend to view the “darkness to light” transformation that yoga promises from this perspective. I love spiritual teachings, but I do not attend synagogue, go to a church or mosque, nor do I attend Gurdwara services. However, I deeply appreciate that there is a powerful energy contained in the most sacred words of all these religions. My Summer Solstice experience this year allowed me to tap into those teachings in a most amazing and unexpected way.
My beloved wife, Kia, and I have now come to Ram Das Puri 7 times for Summer Solstice. This, in itself, is testimony for the immense rewards that exist for those who submit themselves to the rigors of the experience on that beautiful land each year. Immediately after my first solstice was over, I felt the strangest conversation. While part of me declared, “I will never, ever do this again,” another voice rose up within me and said, “You have to come back. There is no choice. And too bad if you don’t like it!”
Eight years later, here I am—a being ineffably transformed at the cellular level. My thinking is elevated. My reactions are different. I feel life fully. I know myself—strengths and limitations—pretty well. The point of it all (read: service to others) is revealing itself each day with more precision and clarity. I purposely organize my year around this experience of Summer Solstice despite the fact that it is the hardest thing I subject myself to in my life!
Who knows what forces were at play to make 2012 Summer Solstice such a profound year? It might be the simple fact that it is 2012, the Age of Aquarius upon us. Or maybe this year’s theme, the Ether Tattva, had its influence. I was blessed to have my first teaching experience there this year. That was an honor and a joy. White Tantric Yoga® was more challenging than usual (at points excruciating) and has proven even more rewarding already. The many workshops, the music, the bazaar, and, of course, the extraordinary morning sadhana experiences were just incredible!
Yet, my greatest take-away from 2012 Summer Solstice will be the 50 or so important, revelatory, love-filled conversations I had over the course of the week with a variety of people, some of whom I knew and others I had just met. It was as if the most important teachings in the Universe were housed in each of the people I would come across. The visual I have is of an energetic emanation projecting out from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib directly into the hearts of everyone present. At one point, it became comical. I was thinking about a question I had about Guru Ram Das and a wise, kind-hearted man named Sat Dharm Singh who I had just met the previous day, walked up to me and said, “I just had this thought about Guru Ram Das I wanted to share with you…”
Many of my questions have been answered. Yet, I have many more questions than before Summer Solstice 2012 began. What is extraordinary is the idea that the Universe will make teachings accessible whether or not a person adheres to a particular religious orientation. I do not have to attend services or be religious in any way. The only thing that seems to be required is a heartfelt desire to learn, grow and become!
I feel a great sense of Love and support from the Global Kundalini Yoga Community. My intention is to continue to pass along these wonderful teachings, which Yogi Bhajan brought to us all in some magical way that I still cannot grasp or fully understand. The mystery of life continues and, thank God, the deep well of teachings continue to reveal themselves as well. In the confusion of these times, if we can just find the willingness to pick up the treasured teachings at our feet, we will be uplifted into a state of mind beyond confusion. Our whole being will be fine-tuned and we will know what to do and when to do it.
I wish this for you.
See you on the path this year.
